Machine Quilting – Back by popular demand

Learn to machine quilt on your home sewing machine. The nuts, bolts and everything else you need to learn to machine quilt. Class 1 will start with the basics and Classes 2 and 3 will further your knowledge of learning to free motion, stipple, stitch in the ditch, outlining and echo stitching.

Spider Web

These blocks should come with a warning: once you start making them, it’s hard to stop. Do not let the complicated looking design fool you, this flip-and-sew technique is perfect for a beginner. You can use a controlled color scheme, such as pastels or plaids or go totally scrap happy.

Many of you have been admiring this beautiful wallhanging by Betty Neff. And we’re lucky to have the designer herself here to teach this great project! This quilt is perfect for your home even if you don’t live on Center St! You need to feel comfortable with paper piecing to take this class.

Rumbleford

Red Baskets

Of course, you could make brown baskets, or yellow ones! We just had so much fun picking out the red white and blue fabric from Diane Knott’s collection –we had to have red ones! This collection is a called “Summertime” and doesn’t it make you feel like you’re at a lake side cottage, having a lovely picnic? The small project would make a beautiful hostess gift. It’s your choice of hand or machine blanket stitch. The larger wall hanging is more dramatic in reds and blacks but just as easy to make.

Kaleidoscope

I ran across this ruler and loved the quilt pattern you can make with it. Learn how easy this quilt is to make using this ruler and you’ll be making more than one. Our class sample is made from Eleanor Burns’ new collection, True Blue but I’m hoping someone will make theirs in Christmas fabrics!

SKILL BUILDERS: APPLIQUE

When you concentrate on a specific portion of any skill you get better faster. This is the case with the two classes offered in Cutwork Appliqué. Learn the basics of appliqué to move on to bigger and better appliqué projects!

ALL CURVES CUTWORK APPLIQUE concentrates on only inside and outside curves, allowing you to perfect those skills. Basic needleturn appliqué skills needed. Pattern provided.

Trumpet Flowers

The combination of easy piecing and applique results in a charming wall hanging. Sjoukje made the entire project by machine but she will also show you how to do the buttonhole stitch by hand and then you decide which method you prefer. A great introduction to fusible web appliqué!

Deli Tote

Pack a lunch each day? This great little tote has a place for your silverware, an ice pack and even includes napkins. It’s too cute and a great way to stop using a paper bag everyday. You’ll be sooooo cute toting your little deli tote to work each day. You’ll want to make this one even if you don’t pack your lunch. It makes a great sewing bag – use the silverware pockets for your scissors and other goodies. Bring a bag lunch for class and next time you’ll have a new tote to pack your lunch. If you have your fabrics pre-cut before class, you’ll have time to make two. Thinking Christmas?

Fabric Dyeing

Care and Feeding of Your Featherweight

If you missed it before, Sharon is back with this essential class for all Featherweight owners. You will go home knowing how to clean and oil your machine, where to lubricate, how to do simple repairs and more. This is for the old black Singer Featherweight machine only.

Stained Glass Tulip

Do you love the look of stained glass but dread making all that leading? Here is an easy but stunning way to create the look. Learn the technique on a small wallhanging with only 6 pieces. Let your imagination soar as you pick colors for this one. Three different finishing techniques are included in the instructions. Dramatic, yet simple--the best combination ever! Students should be comfortable with needleturn appliqué.

Vive La Tote

I spotted this tote at Fall Market last year and loved it. It uses 2 ½” strips of batiks and is a very sharp and versatile tote. You’ll learn to make the largest tote in class but the pattern includes two other sizes. Learn one and you can make the other two!

Morning Glory Charmer

Have you been tempted by those beautiful charm packs but wondered what you would do with them? This original design was a result of Sjoukje asking herself the same thing. She loves to “Cut once, sew twice” and came up with an easy way to make both the center and the ribbon blocks in one go. Two charm packs give you enough leftovers for the bonus “Bricks-and-Blocks” quilt. Perfect beginner project!

Lone Star

Typically, the lone star pattern is a quilt not for beginners but it’s not the case with our quilt. We use Quiltsmart interfacing to make this dramatic wallhanging easy enough for a beginner. Your 38” quilt will make a beautiful addition to your home as a wallhanging or table topper.

Snowball

Not a snowballs chance in hell your driver won’t win! You will be a front runner as well, if you join us to make a quilt with a racing theme, using the Snowball block. Sjoukje is married to a race car driver, but instead of going to the track this weekend, she’ll be on hand to show you how to handle speed on your sewing machine. Kits will be available! (if you don’t like cars, we have a wonderful Civil War reproduction example on hand as well)

Twist and Turn

This whimsical design is definitely one of those quilts that you will go back to time and time again. A fast and easy assembly of strips makes this a fun quilt. It is important to choose a definite contrast between the dark and light fabrics to emphasize the twist and turn of this quilt design. A great quilt to use your stash fabrics!!

Skylights

Just two fabrics create a sense of depth as you look through this skylight. You get to choose what you view, and you get to practice your reverse appliqué skills—the whole piece is reverse appliqué! Floorquilts

Raid your stash and turn your favorite fabrics and quilt patterns into durable, walkable art ! Hand Quilting

Whether you've just finished your first quilt top and are ready to learn to quilt, or simply want to improve your quilting stitch, come learn this unique way to quilt without poking your underneath fingers and without a hoop or frame. (It is not stab stitch.) Basting, marking methods, echo quilting, thread and batting are covered as well as the quilting stitch. Class fee includes a prebasted quilt sandwich.

Big 3: Goose in the Pond

Accurate cutting, precision piecing and proper pressing—you need all three! In this class you will learn to accurately cut quarter- and half-square triangle units and more. Then set your machine up for optimum performance and that all-important scant ¼ inch seam allowance. Think you’re done? Almost... pressing can make or break your block and ultimately your quilt top. You will also learn how to add borders that fit and don’t ripple! You’ll be amazed at how much you will learn in this class!
